What is Bergamot Essential Oil?
Bergamot (or citrus bergamia) essential oil comes from the peel of the bergamot orange fruit. While this fascinating fruit is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia, approximately 80% of the world's bergamot supply now comes from Calabria in southern Italy.
Like most essential oils in the citrus family, bergamot is extracted through a cold-press method. During this process, the peel of the bergamot fruit is mechanically pressed to rupture the oil sacs and release the oil. Cold-pressing is considered somewhat gentler than other extraction methods and helps to preserve the compounds responsible for bergamot's powerful therapeutic benefits and unmistakable aroma.
Bright yet mellow, uplifting yet calming, bergamot essential oil has an intriguing and nuanced scent profile. It's fresh and citrusy with a soft floral sweetness and a hint of herbal spice. This oil is a firm favourite in aromatherapy, loved for the way it gently calms the mind while lifting the mood. Bergamot is ideal for use in times of stress or when you’re craving a little emotional balance. In skincare, it offers soothing and antibacterial properties that can help clear and brighten the complexion and bring balance to the skin.
