Don't Make These Mistakes When Using Essential Oils Around Your Pets
While essential oils can offer numerous benefits for our pets, it's crucial to exercise caution and avoid the common mistakes that even loving pet owners make.
First off, itโs important to note that not all essential oils are safe for pets. Before introducing any essential oils to your pet, it's a good idea to consult with a veterinarian or a certified animal aromatherapist to ensure the safety and appropriateness of the oils for your specific pet.
Each pet is different, so even oils that are safe for animals can have different effects on different pets. One of the main mistakes to watch out for is using the wrong oils. Many essential oils are not pet friendly, and these should be avoided at all costs.
Cats, in particular, have a unique metabolism that makes them more susceptible to the potential toxicity of certain essential oils. Some essential oils, such as penny royal and wintergreen can be harmful to cats and should be avoided. Similarly, essential oils with high concentrations of phenols, like oregano and thyme, should also be used with caution around pets.
Itโs also important to avoid applying essential oils directly to a pet's fur (unless diluted with a carrier oil) or allowing them to be ingested as this can lead to irritation, inflammation, or even internal damage. If you are using essential oils around your pet's bedding, ensure the oils are well diluted which will result in the concentration being lower & safer. If you are using a diffuser for your essential oils, remember to never add a carrier oil into the diffuser as the ultrasonic vibrations can not break down the carrier oil to be dispersed, and instead, the carrier oil will sit in the bottom of the diffuser and potentially clog it up.
If youโre unsure, or if your pet has certain conditions, always speak to your vet.
Safe Ways to Diffuse Essential Oils Around Your Precious Pets
Firstly, choose the right oils. This is key. Do your research on pet-friendly essential oils.
Then itโs a case of using them in the right way. Adding a few drops of essential oil into the water of a diffuser is the best practice to be safe for pets. Diffusers use ultrasonic vibrations to break down the oil and water into a fine mist and disperse into the air.
When using a diffuser around your furry friends, itโs crucial to have the room or area well-ventilated and avoid diffusing in small enclosed spaces. Your pets should have the option to leave the area if they wish in case the smell of the essential oils becomes too much for them. Itโs important to pay attention to your pet's body language when diffusing essential oils to make sure they are always comfortable. If you notice your pet moving away from the smell, this is a clear sign they are uncomfortable and a different essential oil may be more suitable.
For calming and anxiety-reducing purposes, essential oils can be diffused in the air or around the pet's bedding or resting area. Lavender, chamomile, and clary sage are excellent choices for this purpose. Start with a low concentration, such as 1-2 drops of essential oil per 100ml of water in a diffuser, and gradually increase the concentration if needed.
To help repel fleas, ticks, and other pests, essential oils like cedarwood and lemongrass, can be used. These oils can be diluted in a carrier oil, such as our fractionated coconut oil or jojoba oil, and applied to the pet's coat, avoiding sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, and genitals. When diluting the oil, be sure to use the appropriate dilution ratio, typically 1-2 drops of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil. Remember, always ensure carrier oils arenโt being added to a diffuser as it can break them!
For supporting wound healing and skin health, essential oils like frankincense can be beneficial. However, these oils should be used with caution and only under the guidance of a veterinarian or a certified animal aromatherapist. Dilute the essential oils in a carrier oil and apply a small amount to the affected area, monitoring your pet's reaction closely.
It's important to remember that essential oils should never be ingested by pets, as this can lead to serious health issues. If your pet accidentally ingests an essential oil, contact your veterinarian immediately.
