Essential oils have been used for thousands of years - not as a trend, but as a practical approach to wellbeing that has endured because it works. This guide covers what you need to know to start using them with confidence.
The basics
Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts - drawn from leaves, flowers, bark, roots, and resins. Through steam distillation or cold pressing, the volatile compounds responsible for a plant's scent and therapeutic qualities are captured in their most potent form.
A single bottle can represent hundreds of kilograms of plant material. That concentration is why quality of sourcing matters more with essential oils than almost any other wellness product. At Lively Living, every oil we sell carries ACO certification - Australian Certified Organic - which means the sourcing, extraction, and handling meet independently verified organic standards, batch by batch.
"The difference between a good essential oil and a great one is not the label. It is what happened before the oil ever reached the bottle."
Using them
There is no single correct way to use essential oils. Most people begin with one or two methods and expand from there. The key is starting simply and understanding the purpose behind each approach.
The most common entry point. Adding a few drops of oil to an ultrasonic diffuser disperses aromatic molecules into the air, creating an ambient effect that is both sensory and functional. Diffusion works well for mood, focus, sleep, and air quality. Lively Living's range of diffusers - including the Aroma-Snooze for sleep support - are designed to run quietly and efficiently for hours at a time.
Essential oils applied to the skin require dilution in a carrier oil first (see the safety section below). Once diluted, they can be applied to pulse points, the soles of the feet, or areas of specific concern. Lively Living's roll-on blends - including the Snooze, Stress, and Elevate - come pre-diluted in certified organic carrier oils, making them the simplest starting point for topical use. Those who prefer to create their own blends can start with the DIY Roller and Carrier Oil Pack.
Adding 2 to 3 drops of essential oil to a warm bath or the corner of a shower floor allows the steam to carry aromatic molecules into the airways. This method combines inhalation benefits with the relaxation of heat. Use oils suited to the purpose: lavender or chamomile for unwinding, eucalyptus or peppermint for respiratory support.
A simple and underused method. Add a few drops of oil to warm or cool water, soak a clean cloth in the solution, and apply to the area of concern. Peppermint works well for tension headaches and muscle discomfort. Lavender is well suited to minor skin irritations and general comfort.
Tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon, and lavender are all proven antimicrobial agents. Adding them to DIY cleaning solutions is an effective way to reduce synthetic chemicals in the home without sacrificing performance. A few drops in a spray bottle with water and white vinegar is a reliable all-purpose cleaner. Browse our single note oils to find the right one for your routine.
Once you understand dilution ratios, essential oils become a versatile ingredient for body scrubs, facial serums, hair treatments, and more. Rosemary supports scalp circulation, lavender is widely used in skincare, and tea tree's antibacterial properties make it a useful spot treatment. Start small and patch-test any new formulation. All of Lively Living's certified organic single oils are suited to DIY use.
Safety
Essential oils are potent. That is their value - and it is also why a few straightforward guidelines matter.
Always dilute essential oils before applying to skin. The standard guidance is 2 to 4 drops per 10ml of carrier oil for children, and 7 to 10 drops per 10ml for adults. Fractionated coconut oil is a good all-purpose carrier - it is light, odourless, and widely available. Undiluted application can cause sensitisation, even with oils that feel gentle on first contact.
Reactions to essential oils are uncommon but possible. Signs include skin redness, itching, or swelling. If a reaction occurs, discontinue use immediately. A patch test on the inside of the wrist before full application is a sensible habit, particularly with oils you have not used before.
Children's systems are more sensitive than adults'. We recommend waiting until a baby is at least 3 months old before diffusing essential oils in their space, and using only very low concentrations. Keep all essential oil bottles out of reach of children. See our range of essential oils for babies and children for formulations suited to younger users.
Some oils are considered safe during pregnancy and others are not. Lavender and chamomile are generally well-regarded, but individual circumstances vary. If you are pregnant, consult your healthcare provider before introducing any new essential oil into your routine.
Animals metabolise essential oils differently to humans. Cats in particular lack certain liver enzymes and can be sensitive to oils that are entirely safe for people. Always diffuse in a well-ventilated space, ensure pets can leave the room, and research any oil before using it around animals.
Getting started
There is no need to begin with twenty oils. A small, well-chosen collection will serve you far better than a large, unfocused one.
Start by identifying one or two purposes - sleep support, stress relief, focus, or immune resilience are common starting points. Every Lively Living oil is labelled with its primary benefits, and the website allows you to filter the full range by category, making it straightforward to find oils aligned with what you are looking for.
For those who want an efficient way to build a collection, Lively Living's value bundles allow you to select 3, 5, 10, or 15 oils and save on the total. There are also curated theme bundles - including the Winter Wellness Trio, the Pregnancy and New Mum Collection, and others - for those who prefer a pre-considered selection.
