What are essential oils?

Used by many nations across the world for thousands of years, essential oils are made from plant extracts and are known for their unique scents and various health benefits. Essential oils are used in aromatherapy practices and are most commonly added to a diffuser. Some of the most recognised essential oils include peppermint, lavender, lemongrass and cedarwood.

How do l use essential oils?

Once you have purchased either a single essential oil or an aromatherapy oil blend, there are a few common ways to use them. Firstly, you can add the essential oils to a diffuser or vapouriser, which disperses the oils into the air through vibrations which cause ultrasonic waves — creating microscopic particles of oils. Alternatively, you can mix your essential oils with water (in a bath, for example) or put them directly onto your skin with a roll-on blend.

Will essential oils expire?

While essential oils don’t necessarily expire, we suggest paying attention to the use-by date provided on the packaging. Generally speaking, essential oils are in their best condition in the first two years before they begin to oxidise. At Lively Living, we use 100% pure organic ingredients when producing all of our essential oils — however, it’s a good idea to correctly store your products to enjoy a longer shelf life. Keep your essential oil products in a cool place out of direct sunlight, and always ensure the lid is closed tightly.

How can you tell if an essential oil is 100% organic?

Unfortunately, some suppliers will claim their essential oil products are 100% organic when they are not. To avoid disappointment, always ensure the product you wish to purchase has been given the Australian Certified Organic (ACO) logo.

Many essential oils, such as lavender, chamomile, and ylang-ylang, have been shown to have a calming effect on the mind and body. How Do I Store My Essential Oils?

Store in glass brown dropper bottles away from direct sunlight. Aim to keep the lid on tightly so no nasties get in! Also note that while essential oils don’t go off, they do go through an oxidation process which can reduce their effects. 1-2 years is the standard shelf life once opened for most essential oils.

What essential oils are safe to diffuse around pets?

Every pet will be different, but for dogs, we know that Myrrh, Geranium, Lavender, Frankincense, Cedarwood, and Rosemary are all good. These should not be inhaled by pups or applied topically to their coat but if you diffuse them around your dog they should be fine and can even have calming effects. How do you make essential oils?

Essential Oils can be extracted from a number of different processes. One common way is Steam Distillation. Essential oils use the steam that rises when you heat a herb or plant. This vaporising process distills the herb or plant into oil form so it can be used. Some people choose to make their own DIY oils, however, it’s a tricky process and it’s always best to use professionally made oils.

Yes! Essential oils are a natural, safe way to reap multiple health benefits. That said, you must use them mindfully to reap the rewards. They can become unsafe when you don’t follow instructions and ingest, inhale, or use them topically in amounts that are too concentrated.

How do I use essential oils in a diffuser?

It’s so easy to use essential oils in a diffuser. Simply add a couple of drops to the water in your diffuser and turn it on and you’re good to go. You can blend essential oils or stick to one, making it stronger by adding more drops.

How many drops are in a 10ml essential oil?

There are roughly 200 drops in a 10ml essential oil.

How many drops are in a 15ml essential oil?

There are roughly 300 drops in a 15ml essential oil.

Can you use essential oils in pregnancy?

Yes, but you must use it with care and precaution. Some essential oils are not to be used in pregnancy, so do your research. Some no no’s include but are not limited to Aniseed, Basil, Birch, Camphor, Clary, Sage (except in the third trimester) , Hyssop, Mugwort, and Oak Moss.

Add 1 drop to a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply lightly through the ends or scalp.
